Biography

“[Susannah] has this ability to create stories through everyday objects that really speak to the viewer, and a real eye for composition, light, color, and beauty. Her photos are very transporting.” ~ Holly Becker, Decor8

Unravelling is the fine art photography of Susannah Conway, a photographer, writer and workshop facilitator living in Bath in south-west England. After studying photography for three years at the Bournemouth Arts Institute, Susannah moved to London in 1997 to study journalism at the London College of Fashion. Graduating in 2000 with a first-class degree, she worked at several national newspapers before landing at the Daily Mail as fashion editor of their newly launched website. In 2002 she left the Mail to embark on a freelance career, writing regularly for a variety of publications including Cosmopolitan and The Guardian.

After the sudden death of her partner in 2005, Susannah left London to return to the south coast, and in doing so began a journey that has led her to find new meaning in the irrevocably changed world around her. It was during the first year of grieving that she picked up a camera again while visiting friends in the United States. Surrounded by new sights and sounds, the camera focussed her attention on the present; shortly after returning home she launched Susannah Conway Photography, offering portrait sessions and events photography to both business and private clients.

Launched in 2007, Unravelling is the second strand of her business, focusing on fine art images for exhibition and sale. Using the camera as a meditative tool, Susannah’s photographs articulate a sense of transience and recollection, examining how the world around us holds memories and familiarity, the ever-present backdrop to our individual stories. Using a combination of analogue photography and digital editing, Susannah’s visual language uses everyday objects and experiences to evoke poignant reverie for the viewer.
